Wailing brought back painful memories of Keefer and Chastity. And he really, really wished she'd make her kid shut up. He wanted nothing to do with her, period. But how could he do nothing when a kid was involved? He could look the other way when a woman angled for trouble and got some. ![]() She'd brought an infant on a freight train? He shot a concerned glance at the other four men. Judging by the size of the bundle, the baby could be no more than a month or so old. The wind-breaker she hugged to her chest was wiggling. ![]() He turned an appalled gaze back to the girl. He strained to breathe, his eyeballs feeling as if they might pop from his skull. A baby? Liquor backwash went up his nose. The sound startled him so much that he choked. A sudden wailing trailed to Rafe over the rhythmic clanking of the boxcar wheels. ![]()
