6/27/2023 0 Comments Red harvest by dashiell hammettEverything a reader could want.Īt least you’d think so, wouldn’t you, and it would be enough for your average hard-boiled novel. And a good looking but slatternly gold digger too. Sure, there is a murder the Op has to solve, but soon, in addition, we have stabbings, ambushes, furtive late night shootings and afternoon gun battles. Our detective, the nameless “Continental Op”-employed by the Continental Detective Agency-soon begins systematically destroying the rival gangs by sowing lies and discord among them. Oh they broke it alright, but now these gangsters-with names like Lew Yard, “Whispers,” Pete the Finn-have carved Elihu’s little city into fiefdoms, and Boss Wilsson is not the boss anymore. A few years before the book opens, mining tycoon and city boss Elihu Wilsson called in some thugs and goons to break a mining strike. The City is Personville, and people call it “Poisonville,” but not because they are speaking with an accent. I’ll give you three good reasons-from least to most-why you should read Red Harvest: 1) it made possible the fine Leone film A Fistful of Dollars, 2) it inspired the Kurosawa masterpiece Iojimbo which influenced A Fistful of Dollars, and 3) it is an old school hard boiled, hardcore novel, with a detective as tough as Spade, Marlowe and Hammer put together, written in hard-as-nails prose, and set in a small West Coast city, a city with a heart of stone.

The last thing Dastien hears from Tessa was her plea- help Axel. Tessa has seconds to make a choice, but there’s only one thing she can do to save the two most important men in her life-sacrifice herself. But when Tessa steps into the darkened warehouse, she doesn’t expect to see her brother laying in a pool of his own blood, smell the sulfuric scent of black magic, or feel the pain of her mate being shot full of silver. The location pin was in a weird spot, but maybe he’d found a magical anomaly there. Tessa-part witch, part werewolf, raised human and now the unofficial leader of a newly minted supernatural alliance-thinks nothing of her brother, Axel, texting her and Dastien to meet him. While the rest of the world cringed and laughed, this stereotype of fierce love for cats has helped queer and gay women build community and visibility for nearly 50 years. Most women assiduously avoid the “cat lady” label, but lesbians have embraced the association. They are lesbian cat lovers, an often disturbing, sometimes endearing, caricature of women who love these pets almost as much as each other - and infinitely more than they love anyone else. These women mention their cats by name in their work bios and write poetry from their cats’ perspective. A cat is an itch that scratches you.”ĭeDrew’s adoration of cats represents one of the most enduring lesbian clichés out there. The women are fundamentally uncool, but there is poetry in their devotion: “A cat is a friend you didn’t know you needed. Wearing turtleneck sweaters and pleated pants, DeDrew - played by Kate McKinnon - and a rotating cast of girlfriends and former flings revel in their co-dependent tendencies and love of bad puns, while extolling the virtues and forgiving the flaws of abandoned cats. “A cat is a treasure you hold with your heart … Cats have paws, claws, and zero flaws,” begins a Saturday Night Live “ commercial” for “Whiskers R We,” starring a sanguine, white-haired cat rescuer named Barbara DeDrew. Photo: Dana Edelson/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Kate McKinnon and Melissa McCarthy in SNL’s “Whiskers R We” commercial A Place to Hang the Moon is a story about the dire importance of family: the one you're given, and the one you choose. They find comfort in the village lending library, whose kind librarian, Nora Müller, seems an excellent choice of billet, except that her German husband's whereabouts are currently unknown, and some of the villagers consider her unsuitable. Moving from one billet to another, the children suffer the cruel trickery of foster brothers, the cold realities of outdoor toilets and the hollowness of empty stomachs. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer? It's a preposterous plan, but off they go- keeping their predicament a secret, and hoping to be placed in a temporary home that ends up lasting forever. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, 9, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. And that differences-like being a former vampire-are greatly looked down upon. Like the fact that non-Shadowhunter students have to live in the basement. But the Academy is a Shadowhunter institution, which means it has some problems. So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again. And when Clary and Isabelle look at him, expecting him to be a man he doesn’t remember…Simon can’t take it. He knows he was friends with Clary, and that he convinced the total goddess Isabelle Lightwood to go out with him…but he doesn’t know how. But the events of City of Heavenly Fireleft him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore. Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. As a participant in and observer of the events, Sullivan had a prime seat to the thinking that goes into what makes something maintainable: “able to be sustained or restored to proper operating condition.” She clearly describes the taxing innovation and training involved, which included such rigors as reliability analysis, predictive maintenance modeling, and basic principles of human factors engineering in assessing every dimension of every component on the telescope. She also wanted to sing the praises of the engineers and astronauts who invented, produced, and tested all the maintenance features of the telescope. Her motives for writing this book were to bring to light the practical reality of tending to a telescope in orbit and to show what it took in terms of experimentation-tools, support equipment, operating procedures, etc. Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space, was on the shuttle involved in deploying the Hubble, and she spent years on the design and capabilities of the telescope. Though it was ridiculed when its initial photographs were unrefined, it has since been fixed and upgraded multiple times, with amazing results. Hubble has only improved with age, being inherently maintainable in design and open to innovation since its deployment in 1990. A retired astronaut’s memoir of that most celebrated eye in the sky, the Hubble Space Telescope. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Saint Mazie by Jami AttenbergI loved that the story is told from the perspective of a documentarian doing research using Mazie’s diary entries supplemented with present day interviews of people who knew her, their relatives, and historians familiar with that time period. “Queen of the Bowery” would have been another good title for this one because that’s what Mazie was. She’s totally selfish in some ways and selfless in others. She’s a troublemaker in her youth, constantly yearning for adventure and spurning the notion of settling down, but she has a good heart. My Thoughts: Based on a real person, Saint Mazie is the story of one of those quintessential New York characters who is famous just for being herself. Plot Summary: The story of good time girl Mazie Phillips, the proprietress of the Venice Theater on New York’s Lower East Side during the 1920’s and 30’s (Jazz Age, Prohibition, and the Depression). But then EVERYTHING happened, and Briggs became real, and it hurt my heart. In the first half of CRAVE ME, I got to see a lot that she went through, but I needed that emotional connection, and I hate admitting this but I wasn't emotionally connected to her. Who was this tattooed girl in Austin's life who was so important to him that he would bring her to Lucas's mother's funeral. In the previous books Briggs is a complete mystery, with a minor appearance, and I wanted to know more of who Briggs is. This makes complete sense because that is what he struggled with as a teenager - being himself, being misunderstood, and not being able to fully express himself, and this eventually led to the problems he dealt with as he got older. It wasn't until I got into the heart of CRAVE ME that I realized that I really didn't know a lot about Austin from the first three books of the series. Robinson can definitely write heartache, for sure! When you feel like you are experiencing the same emotions as the characters, you know that you are reading something special. After finishing CRAVE ME, the fourth book of the Good Ol' Boys Series, it is safe to say M. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Tag Along by Tom RyanSensing that someone is following his every move, Mac struggles to come to terms with his true feelings towards Connor while scrambling to uncover the truth.
